Maps are coming back into our lives in a big way — with almost 70 per cent of the documents we create containing some geographical reference, deep geo parsing will create new ways in which to use maps and mine information. I was present at a meeting last month where David Rumsey and some guys who were behind GE had a discussion on how APIs could be used to create mashups that threw up geo information in fresh ways. Rumsey is a collector of maps. And he made a wonderful presention to open the meeting. You will love to see Rumsey’s collection at http://www.davidrumsey.com/
As Rumsey said, cartography will become a read/write medium. That’s where GE is headed. MSN too has the Virtual Earth project that is quite spectacular. Between them, we can expect plenty of action.
